BBC Drama Cranford

During summer of 2009 the BBC Drama Production of Cranford came to film at Wasing.
The two part Christmas Special was partly filmed at Wasing Place.

“For a few days before they came we weren’t allowed to cut the grass,” explains Wasing’s events manager Lisa Buffery, who is also a big fan of the series. “That’s because in those days it would have been grazed by sheep and there wouldn’t have been any stripe marks.”

Inside the crew shot in three rooms. “The cameramen particularly liked the hallway explains Lisa, “because it is so big. We took the more modern paintings down, but left some of the period up, along with some of the busts.”

“When I see a fire screen in shot, I’ll know it’s hiding something. The attention to detail was incredible. They even took out the panes of glass in the front door and replaced them with panelling and a knocker because there’s a scene where an actor knocks on the door. They were absolutely determined to get all the period details right.”

“The whole place did look stunning,” says Lisa. “But we have tenants in here and everything needed to be returned to how the crew had found it. They were marvellous, but we did ask them to leave the walls in the drawing room as they were because they were much nicer than before.”
