Minerals

Wasing Estate has an excellent quality mineral resource under the land. Gravel extraction has been one of the key reasons for our survival at our current size. Without it, Wasing would have been divided up into many different parcels and ownerships.
The Estate has promoted further sites notably at Wasing Lower Farm, between Woolhampton and Aldermaston, to the review of the Minerals Development plan being undertaken in West Berkshire. The Estate is now working with the gravel companies Lafarge and Marley to prepare a planning application for extraction to be submitted in the first quarter of 2012 to meet the needs of the local gravel market. Lots of surveys include nature conservation, landscape and archaeology have been undertaken and the proposed scheme was presented at a public consultation exhibition in later November 2011. A newsletter to explain all this and the information panels from the exhibition can be accessed by clicking on the links below.

With the level of demand for gravel in the local area, the ability to have a local supply is critical in minimising environmental damage which is why we believe Wasing offers a beneficial site for future extraction.

Today, proximity to market is a fundamental consideration to minimise environmental harm. Any extraction is done with as much care as possible for the environment and the local area. Once gravel is extracted, the area is carefully restored, and Wasing's objectives are always significant environmental gain in restoration.
