Our Plans for Shalford Farm

A planning application submitted to West Berkshire Council seeks to take the next step in diversifying Wasing from a traditional rural estate to a modern sustainable business.

The proposals for Shalford Farm have been designed to complement and support both our existing farming enterprises and successful wedding business at Wasing Park. They include additional overnight accommodation and bespoke wedding organisation services, together with a mix of other uses including an Estate Farm Shop and on-site Restaurant. In addition to supporting the wedding business these uses will support our farming enterprises by providing an opportunity for the sale and consumption of Estate sourced produce offering a true ‘Field to Fork’ experience.

Joshua Dugdale, owner of Wasing, thinks the new proposal will help to ensure the sustainability of the Estate, will potentially provide an additional 30 local jobs and a community hub which will be open to all.

This year, our farm is converting to organic as part of the overall strategy of increasing the range of flora and fauna, as well as growing delicious and healthy food.

We are very excited about this venture which, with our farm going organic this year, feels like a natural step. Our objective is to become as sustainable as feasible, with as little of our produce going out of the local area as possible. We envisage that this will be a fantastic resource for the Estate and for the local community and can’t wait to get going,” says Joshua.

Sustainability is paramount in the overall energy strategy for the project. Renewable energy will be produced via a boiler fueled by wood chips made from trees on the estate. We are already familiar with wood chip at Wasing, as there is a biomass boiler at the main estate serving a number of buildings.

The development of the barn, piggeries and old dairy at Shalford Farm are likely to be completed in 2021.
